Black Pine ( Mataī ) | Prumnopitys taxifolia

The black pine grows up to 25m in height with a trunk up to 2 m diameter.

Every seed is covered with a  soft edible pulp and are dispersed by the New Zealand wood pigeon (kereru), which eats the 'berries' and passes the seeds in its droppings. The species is fairly common in native forests of the North Island with good examples found in Pureora and Whirinaki Forest Parks.
